01 -
Heat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9x13-inch baking pan with nonstick spray or butter.
02 -
In a large bowl, beat the cake mix, eggs, water, and oil for about 2 minutes, or until smooth. Scrape the bowl once so no dry mix remains.
03 -
Spread the batter in the prepared pan. Bake for 25-30 minutes, or until the center springs back and a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean.
04 -
Cool the cake for 10 minutes. Use the handle of a wooden spoon to poke holes almost to the bottom of the cake, spacing them about 1 inch apart.
05 -
Whisk the butterscotch topping, sweetened condensed milk, and salt until smooth. Pour slowly over the warm cake and spread with a spatula so the mixture fills the holes.
06 -
Cover the pan and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or up to 2 days before topping. The cake should be fully cold before the whipped topping goes on.
07 -
Spread the whipped topping evenly over the chilled cake. Sprinkle with toffee bits and optional pecans, then drizzle lightly with caramel or butterscotch topping. Slice and serve cold.
